If you can only afford food sold in the supermarket or Wal*Mart, as long as the food is labeled AAFCO certified. Make sure the certification says "tested and found to be adequate" vs. a lower standard which is still AAFCO certified, but says "formulated to meet AAFCO standards."

Also be sure to provide your dog with clean water throughout the day. Drinking encourages urination (as does an extra walk), which is natures way of cleaning the urinary tract.


A dogs body was meant for movement, not sitting around all day. This shocked us, because if the dog food is actually healthy, then why the need to maintain the ability to use uncommon and lengthy scientific names in their ingredient list? Why wouldn't the commercial dog food companies want the public to EASILY understand what the dog foods are made out of??

So we decided to investigate different commercial dog foods, to see if we could determine what is actually in them, and where the components for the food actually comes from. Following is our review of Nutro Dog Food. More reviews are to come! Again, we are only disclosing the information that they have already publicly disclosed on their website, to see if we can make sense of it. We are NOT indicating an opinion one way or the other, whether or not this food is healthy.

We found descriptive words like "Natural Nutrition," "Ultra-Holistic Nutrition," and "Super-Premium," to describe their dog foods. Regarding ingredients, Nutro Dog Food lists "natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals," and also "real chicken protein or real beef protein." Their website claims that there are "no artificial preservatives," nor are there "artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners."

The ingredients list is as follows: "Chicken Meal, Wheat Flour, Ground Whole Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Ground Rice, Chicken, Natural Flavors, Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Carbonate, Monosodium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Yeast Culture, L-Lysine, Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Oxide, Dried Kelp, Lecithin, Garlic Flavor, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Riboflavin (source of Vitamin B2), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity)."

All in all, we could not find anything on the Nutro Dog Food website that indicated they were involved in any of the practices mentioned earlier in this article. We believe that the ingredient list does not indicate any chemicals known to be harmful to dogs or people. The inclusion of "ground whole wheat" and "dried kelp" leads us to believe that Nutro Dog Food is probably one of the healthy dog food brands on the market.

The whole point, however, is that there really is no way to know. The main driving forces behind all public corporations are profit, and increasing stock price. We believe it is the obligation of all responsible dog-owners to make sure they are aware of what's really in the food that they feed to their dogs!

Dog Food Recall Widens - 8000 Complaints Filed

As the nationwide recall of contaminated dog food widens, the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company has now recalled some of its dog food upon discovery that it is tainted with ingredients that have contributed to the kidney failure and death of dogs.

The contaminated ingredient is wheat gluten from China. This wheat gluten is from the same supplier that delivered wheat gluten to Menu Foods who earlier recalled more than 95 brands of dog food sold as private label dog food and as major brands through large dog food retailers.

Some reports have indicated that it is tainted with a rat poison and additional laboratory tests have revealed the existence of melamine. Melamine is used in the in the manufacture of plastic products such as plastic spoons. Melamine is also used in the manufacture of fertilizer.

However, there is a strong correspondence between the menu plans of these different versions so, for all intents and purposes, they can be treated as the same diet and comments applicable to one are substantially applicable to them all.

In summary, the 3 Day Cardiac Diet comprises menu plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner covering a period of three days. The daily calorie intake is about 1,000 calories, so much of the weight loss benefit is likely obtained by the restricted calorie intake, although some claim is made that the benefit is due to chemical reaction. Eating a low level of carbohydrates will also mean that water is lost from the body.

For the plan to produce results, it's important to keep hydration levels up by drinking plenty of water: 6-8 cups is recommended. This also aids digestion.

An important source of protein for the 3 day Cardiac diet is tuna. 1/2 cup of tuna is consumed on the first two days, increasing to 1 cup on the third day. Some concerns about this diet stem from the restricted levels of calories and nutrition. As the calories provided in this diet are so low, it's is likely that followers will feel hunger pangs and lower energy levels, especially by the third day. Vitamins and minerals are also low so that probably a multi vitamin supplement should be recommended as an additional source.

With only three small meals a day, your body may start to recognize that only a limited food supply is available and begin to compensate by reducing metabolism and energy levels to conserve fat reserves. This actually makes it harder to lose weight and, along with the feelings of hunger, places the body under additional stress.

The 3 Day Cardiac diet does not claim to be suitable for long term use and after 3 days you should follow a program that offers more variety in the content to provide the proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients that your body needs. More variety would also make it easier to follow this plan, as well as more enjoyable.

It is possible to follow a quick weight reduction plan that offers a more balanced and healthier range of foods. In particular, one which includes a technique known as calorie shifting and takes into account your own food preferences would be a good choice.

Following the 3 Day Cardiac Diet provides restricted calories and nutrients for its intended duration and the weight loss benefits come with some risk to health as well as bodily stress. Ever hear of the apple diet? It's a popular weight loss diet that has numerous versions and spin-offs. A lot of these versions are healthy and work for weight loss, however 1 version you must absolutely avoid.

First, why the apple diet works...


A big reason on why the apple diet works has to do with the high water content and high amount of fiber in each apple. The high water content allows you to "eat water" basically. The foods you mostly "eat water" with are generally low in calories, but very filling. For example, a 300-calorie candy bar won't fill you up, but 300-calories worth of apples will.

Just eat 1 apple before each of 3 meals. Nothing more. I won't even tell you to stop eating your favorite foods. Obviously, if you eat a little bit more healthy, you'll increase the speed in which you lose weight... but I won't force you to eat healthier.

Rule #2: Don't forget rule #1

Seriously, there is just 1 rule to the apple diet. However I want to add that I've found that my clients who have tried the apple diet get better results simply by following rule #1 and eating healthy snacks.

That's all you need to change in your diet... eat an apple before each of 3 meals... and eat healthy snacks. You can continue to eat more unhealthy type of foods for your meals. Just don't eat unhealthy snacks!

3 Day Tuna Fish Diet Review

Well like most people I had put a little weight on over the winter and decided to try and take a bit off. I only needed to lose about 10 pounds or so to get to my normal weight so as silly as it seemed I decided to give the 3 day tuna fish diet a try. I figured it was quick and not to complicated so no harm done if it didn't work. So off I went to the grocery store with my shopping list.

For those who have never heard of this diet, basically it involves eating tuna every day at one meal and your suppose to be able to lose about 10 pounds which was right in my sweet spot. I must say I did modify it a bit and ate tuna every day at lunch even though on day 3 I was suppose to eat it a dinner, but other than that I ate what the diet told me to. I am sure this had no drastic effect on my results.


My first day of the 3 day tuna fish diet was very easy as it hardly seemed like a diet at all. Not sure what this says about my normal eating habits. On the second day I did become a little hungry though as it felt like I had missed a meal some where. By the third day though I was hungry and very sick of tuna, I was not bothered by it to much as I knew it was pretty much going to be over soon.

The Results

I had checked my weight on the morning I began the 3 day tuna fish diet before breakfast so I waited till the morning of day 4 before breakfast to check the results. First Day:

Looking from a commoner point of view, we can see that these meals plan is actually a balanced meals plan. We have our piece of carbohydrates there from the regular consumption of the toast and saltine crackers. Our fat is supplied by Tuna which we consume everyday, the fat from fish is actually classified into good fat. Not mentioning another protein intake from meat, egg and beef franks. As those are not enough, we are required to gobble a lot of vegetables like cabbage, carrots and beans. Cabbage is actually a negative calories vegetable, so that will help burning down your calories. And those vegetables can act as diuretic while providing your body with vitamins. Our fruit is a little banana that gives us the potassium intake.

Well looks like the 3 day diet is just promoting a balanced eating by putting a lot of emphasis on eating a lot of vegetables. Compare this 3 day diet into the diet that people are doing by stop consuming carbohydrates or protein, this 3 day diet is a lot healthier. In fact this 3 day diet reminds us about our body daily needs, which are vegetables, fruits, meat and carbohydrates.

I am sure even our eating habit everyday cannot match the completeness of this diet. We used to take sweetened cereal or toast packed with jam in the morning, grab fast foods for lunch and again either eats frozen foods, we go and grab other fast foods. So I don't see what's wrong with this diet, with weight loss as a bonus. In fact by following this meals plan as guidelines we can live healthier and longer and also thinner!

But don't worry, I've got a good feeling that you'll be one of the lucky other 3!

The drink is best made fresh each time that you want to drink it but this sometimes isn't possible, especially if you are heading off to work. To try and maintain the cleaning power of the lemon enzymes, make a concentrate of the maple syrup and the lemon juice and just add water when you want to drink it.


So if you were planning on drinking 3 drinks whilst you were out, you would need to make up a concentrate of 6 tablespoons of lemon juice and 6 tablespoons of maple syrup.

To make life easier on yourself, take 3 separate bottles of water each containing 8 fl Oz's of pure water but with the capacity for 10 fl Oz's as you will be adding your concentrate to it.

You'll need to pack a tablespoon for measuring and your cayenne to add at the end. (you can add 3/10ths of a teaspoon of cayenne to the concentrate but cayenne tends to get hotter when it hits liquid and is left for a period of time).

Once you're ready for a drink, just get your concentrate out and give it a good shake, then measure 4 tablespoons into the bottle, add your cayenne, shake and drink!


If hunger creeps in just distract yourself. I decided to detox my house whilst I detoxed my body. There is nothing quite like cleaning to keep you focused and distracted. Two weeks ago, seeing the cutest furry babies in a pet store display, I made the ultimate of impulsive decisions, I adopted two kittens. I hurriedly paid their adoption fee, which was to include their first round of shots and spay/neuter fees. Home we went when the little girl, Lucille Abigail Twinkletoes (Lulu for short), promptly had diarrhea. The smelly, messy, awful kind that gets all over and we still had 30 minutes of driving to do - yuck!

The other kitty, supposedly a boy, we were going to name LeRoy (more on that later) was unscathed by the ride home. Sure enough, when it came time for the litter box, he had diarrhea too.

Like every modern-day mom, I went online. I read good and bad advice because I didn't want to go to the emergency vet that night. Needless to say, one night of diarrhea was enough for me - I made a vet appointment. And here's what I learned that might help you out if you are going through the same experience of bad kitty diarrhea:

1. Feed your young pets. In my kittens case, I took 2 tablespoons of ground turkey, mixed in a tablespoon of pumpkin and cooked rice. They gobbled it up! I was also told that acidophilus - found in yogurt - was good for them. I have an issue feeding dairy to cats, it's a no-no for me, so I added a gel cap of powdered acidophilus to their turkey. They gobbled up more.

2. Make sure they are drinking water and water only to drink. Cows milk is not for kittens, it's for cows. As it was nighttime and the pet shops were closed, I could not get kitten milk replacement formula. So they drank water. Dehydration comes on quick in itty-bitty creatures so I watched and encouraged their drinking.

3. Food - this proved to be a problem. While I am in the pet business and I know that all pet foods are designed to be healthy and nutritious, they are not all equal. I chose a brand based on the pet shop recommendation (and my experience at trade shows). This brand, Solid Gold, I was informed by my vet, can cause loose stools. I decided to try a different brand, my vet suggested Science Diet Kitten Formula - what my other cat was eating. My vet's advice was to give all my felines the kitten formula, even to my (older) cat, instead of giving adult cat food to kittens - which I think they were being given at the pet shop.

4. Get a check for worms. Worms and parasites are common in kittens - especially those from a shelter with an unknown mother and history. Better to be safe than sorry.

5. Be wary of sneezing. Should sneezing be present, it can be a sign of a virus that could cause the diarrhea. Noticing signs like this will help the vet give good advice and is important. My kittens had no sneezing. Their fecal check was negative for worms. In my case the diarrhea must have been caused by their diet.

6. Keep kittens out of your other cat's litter boxes. If you have other cats in the house, it is important, especially in the first few days of introducing new kittens to your home, to have them use their own litter boxes.

7. Scoop kitten poop promptly. In my case it's hard to keep everyone out of all the litter boxes I have so I just tried to keep them meticulously clean. Not everyone like to be forced to go where it smells.

8. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea - just an FYI.

9. Keep an eye on kittens "movements" and keep in contact with your vet.

My new kittens, Lulu and Pearl (I found out 'Leroy' was actually a girl) are getting better. Not quite normal, but better. Diarrhea is a pain for everyone. But, with patience, good advice and good food, it gets better. It's not uncommon for diarrhea to last a month, but it doesn't have to. Let me know if you have any questions. Commercial dog food is a result of a need for convenient and easy pet food, and not the result of an improved dietary menu being discovered. As the commercial dog food industry progresses, the ingredients used in kibble are departing further and further from the profile of food that a canine would have eaten in its evolutionary environment. Because the veterinarians we trust are advocating for the feeding of a dry, grain filled kibble, the general public have come to regard kibble as the pinnacle of canine nutrition. Not only is the information wrong that the consumer receives about the product they are buying, but they are also not informed about the process used to create kibble. Almost all commercial kibble is created through a process called extrusion. Extrusion is usually performed at heats up to 200C and drastically changes the profile of what little protein there is in the food by denaturing the proteins, loss of enzyme activity, and decreased protein solubility in water. The most important part of the kibble for a canine is the protein, and the small amount that is contained in kibble is destroyed by the process of extrusion. Canines require 10 essential amino acids in their diet that they are unable to synthesize. The effect the extrusion process has on the solubility of proteins negatively affects the uptake of these essential amino acids.

Conflict of Interest?

The company that owns Hill's science diet (colgate-palmolive) spends hundreds of thousands of dollars per year funding university research and nutrition programs at each of the twenty-seven veterinary colleges in the US. Therefore, veterinarians are receiving biased education on the nutritional requirements for cats and dogs. Once veterinarians are practicing, they receive up to 40% of the profit for the sale of Hill's Science Diet pet food. Although some of these veterinarians have not been educated about the truths of commercial dog food, there is still a conflict of interest existing between Hill's Pet food, the veterinary practitioner, and the consumer. The two main ingredients in the most popular brand of science diet, ironically name "real chicken" are Brewer's Rice and ground wheat. Brewers rice is a by-product of the alcohol industry, while wheat is indigestible to the canine digestive tract. By advocating food that is detrimental to the health of the animals they are treating, Veterinarians are breaking their most basic oath, to use their knowledge and skills for the protection of animal health.

Alternatives You Can Choose

A wide range of alternatives to commercial dog food are available. Grain free kibble exists that has still undergone the extrusion process, or a non-extruded kibble is available that has been baked at lower temperatures. Dehydrated food has been developed that contains little or no grains, and requires the addition of water to rehydrate the meat that has been dehydrated and powdered at low temperatures. The raw canine diet that is becoming increasingly popular, and that most resembles the diet a canine would eat in its evolutionary environment is the Prey Model Diet. The prey model diet includes the same ratio of muscle meat, organ meat, bone, and sometimes digestive tract or vegetables that would be found in a whole prey item consumed by a wild canine.
