One of the most startling things we have encountered in our review of the commercial dog food industry is the fact that many, if not most, commercial dog foods are quite possibly toxic, and dangerous for your dogs! One of the most disturbing revelations we encountered was the fact that many dog food makers use DEAD, EUTHANIZED pets and zoo animals, as sources for their dog foods! The consumer-public does not appear to be aware of this problem, and the reason is no surprise.

Most commercial dog food brands have healthy-sounding names, such as Nutro Dog Food, Beneful, Science Diet (all brand names are trademarks of their respective parent companies, and as an independent consumer advocate, we have NO affiliation with any commercial dog food manufacturer or brand.) In addition, many commercial dog foods display labels such as "all-natural," "organic," "holisitc," "gourmet," or "premium."

In fact, the dog food industry spend millions of dollars every year in an effort to convince the public that their dog foods are healthy. In addition, we found that the dog food industry regularly lobbies to Congress and the FDA to AVOID having to clearly label the source of the components of their dog foods! This shocked us, because if the dog food is actually healthy, then why the need to maintain the ability to use uncommon and lengthy scientific names in their ingredient list? Why wouldn't the commercial dog food companies want the public to EASILY understand what the dog foods are made out of??

Nutro Dog Food Review

So we decided to investigate different commercial dog foods, to see if we could determine what is actually in them, and where the components for the food actually comes from. Following is our review of Nutro Dog Food. More reviews are to come! Again, we are only disclosing the information that they have already publicly disclosed on their website, to see if we can make sense of it. We are NOT indicating an opinion one way or the other, whether or not this food is healthy.

We found descriptive words like "Natural Nutrition," "Ultra-Holistic Nutrition," and "Super-Premium," to describe their dog foods. Regarding ingredients, Nutro Dog Food lists "natural ingredients with added vitamins and minerals," and also "real chicken protein or real beef protein." Their website claims that there are "no artificial preservatives," nor are there "artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners."

The ingredients list is as follows: "Chicken Meal, Wheat Flour, Ground Whole Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Rice Bran, Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Ground Rice, Chicken, Natural Flavors, Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Carbonate, Monosodium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Potassium Carbonate, Yeast Culture, L-Lysine, Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Oxide, Dried Kelp, Lecithin, Garlic Flavor, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Proteinate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Riboflavin (source of Vitamin B2), Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K activity)."

All in all, we could not find anything on the Nutro Dog Food website that indicated they were involved in any of the practices mentioned earlier in this article. We believe that the ingredient list does not indicate any chemicals known to be harmful to dogs or people. The inclusion of "ground whole wheat" and "dried kelp" leads us to believe that Nutro Dog Food is probably one of the healthy dog food brands on the market.

The whole point, however, is that there really is no way to know. The main driving forces behind all public corporations are profit, and increasing stock price. We believe it is the obligation of all responsible dog-owners to make sure they are aware of what's really in the food that they feed to their dogs!

Dog Food Recall Widens - 8000 Complaints Filed

As the nationwide recall of contaminated dog food widens, the Nestle Purina Pet Care Company has now recalled some of its dog food upon discovery that it is tainted with ingredients that have contributed to the kidney failure and death of dogs.

The contaminated ingredient is wheat gluten from China. This wheat gluten is from the same supplier that delivered wheat gluten to Menu Foods who earlier recalled more than 95 brands of dog food sold as private label dog food and as major brands through large dog food retailers.

Some reports have indicated that it is tainted with a rat poison and additional laboratory tests have revealed the existence of melamine. Melamine is used in the in the manufacture of plastic products such as plastic spoons. Melamine is also used in the manufacture of fertilizer.

With this now widening dog food recall, Purina has recalled Alpo Prime Cuts and Gravy wet food. Earlier, Purina recalled some Mighty Dog pouch products .

While this recall affects feline food at this time, we would suggest that all precautions be taken and to stop feeding any Hills Science Diet dog food as well until assured that the dog food recall will not be extended to this portion of the line as well. Err on the side of caution.

In summary, the 3 Day Cardiac Diet comprises menu plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner covering a period of three days. The daily calorie intake is about 1,000 calories, so much of the weight loss benefit is likely obtained by the restricted calorie intake, although some claim is made that the benefit is due to chemical reaction. Eating a low level of carbohydrates will also mean that water is lost from the body.

For the plan to produce results, it's important to keep hydration levels up by drinking plenty of water: 6-8 cups is recommended. This also aids digestion.

An important source of protein for the 3 day Cardiac diet is tuna. 1/2 cup of tuna is consumed on the first two days, increasing to 1 cup on the third day. Variety and nutrition is provided with small portions of vegetables, grapefruit, banana, cheese, eggs, crackers and toast. Coffee or tea is permitted with meals. Some concerns about this diet stem from the restricted levels of calories and nutrition. As the calories provided in this diet are so low, it's is likely that followers will feel hunger pangs and lower energy levels, especially by the third day. Vitamins and minerals are also low so that probably a multi vitamin supplement should be recommended as an additional source.

With only three small meals a day, your body may start to recognize that only a limited food supply is available and begin to compensate by reducing metabolism and energy levels to conserve fat reserves. This actually makes it harder to lose weight and, along with the feelings of hunger, places the body under additional stress.

The 3 Day Cardiac diet does not claim to be suitable for long term use and after 3 days you should follow a program that offers more variety in the content to provide the proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients that your body needs. More variety would also make it easier to follow this plan, as well as more enjoyable.

It is possible to follow a quick weight reduction plan that offers a more balanced and healthier range of foods. In particular, one which includes a technique known as calorie shifting and takes into account your own food preferences would be a good choice.

A big reason on why the apple diet works has to do with the high water content and high amount of fiber in each apple. The high water content allows you to "eat water" basically. Just eat 1 apple before each of 3 meals. Nothing more. I won't even tell you to stop eating your favorite foods. Obviously, if you eat a little bit more healthy, you'll increase the speed in which you lose weight... but I won't force you to eat healthier.

Rule #2: Don't forget rule #1

Seriously, there is just 1 rule to the apple diet. However I want to add that I've found that my clients who have tried the apple diet get better results simply by following rule #1 and eating healthy snacks.

That's all you need to change in your diet... eat an apple before each of 3 meals... and eat healthy snacks. You can continue to eat more unhealthy type of foods for your meals. Just don't eat unhealthy snacks!

3 Day Tuna Fish Diet Review

Well like most people I had put a little weight on over the winter and decided to try and take a bit off. I only needed to lose about 10 pounds or so to get to my normal weight so as silly as it seemed I decided to give the 3 day tuna fish diet a try. I figured it was quick and not to complicated so no harm done if it didn't work. So off I went to the grocery store with my shopping list.

For those who have never heard of this diet, basically it involves eating tuna every day at one meal and your suppose to be able to lose about 10 pounds which was right in my sweet spot. I must say I did modify it a bit and ate tuna every day at lunch even though on day 3 I was suppose to eat it a dinner, but other than that I ate what the diet told me to. On the second day I did become a little hungry though as it felt like I had missed a meal some where. 3 day diet origin leads to from Cleveland Clinic Diet as the institute who published this 3 day diet program in 1970. The short time span helped the 3 day diet to gain its popularity among dieters. The 3 day diet program is also known as the Navy three day diet, Baptist hospital 3 day diet, Florida 3 day diet, Army 3 day diet, and lot of others bizarre nicknames.

The amounts of nicknames available indicate the popularity of this diet. However experts are continuously bashing this diet as it falls under the category of fad diet. 3 Day diet meals plan emphasizes on eating a limited carbohydrates and a lot of omega 3 fat acids. The basic meals plan for three day diet is listed below along with the obligation to drink at least four glasses of water, two cups of coffee or tea and a glass of cranberry juice everyday.

First Day:

Breakfast: Consume half a grapefruit, a slice of dry toast with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.

Lunch: Consume half cup of dry tuna with a slice of dry toast.

Dinner: Consume 2 slices of meat, 1 cup of green beans, 1 small apple and half cup of vanilla ice

Second Day:

Breakfast: Consume 1 egg, a slice of dry toast and half banana.

Lunch: Consume half cup of Tuna or 1 cup of cottage cheese along with 5 saltine crackers.

Looking from a commoner point of view, we can see that these meals plan is actually a balanced meals plan. We have our piece of carbohydrates there from the regular consumption of the toast and saltine crackers. Our fat is supplied by Tuna which we consume everyday, the fat from fish is actually classified into good fat. Not mentioning another protein intake from meat, egg and beef franks. As those are not enough, we are required to gobble a lot of vegetables like cabbage, carrots and beans. Cabbage is actually a negative calories vegetable, so that will help burning down your calories. And those vegetables can act as diuretic while providing your body with vitamins. Our fruit is a little banana that gives us the potassium intake.

Well looks like the 3 day diet is just promoting a balanced eating by putting a lot of emphasis on eating a lot of vegetables. Compare this 3 day diet into the diet that people are doing by stop consuming carbohydrates or protein, this 3 day diet is a lot healthier. In fact this 3 day diet reminds us about our body daily needs, which are vegetables, fruits, meat and carbohydrates.

I am sure even our eating habit everyday cannot match the completeness of this diet. We used to take sweetened cereal or toast packed with jam in the morning, grab fast foods for lunch and again either eats frozen foods, we go and grab other fast foods. So I don't see what's wrong with this diet, with weight loss as a bonus. In fact by following this meals plan as guidelines we can live healthier and longer and also thinner!
